The story of how Bum created an innovative textile company in less than a year.
Told by Nanna Ditzel, who designed the entire new collection and travelled across Europe with Bum and his wife Johnny to find manufacturers who would weave the textiles.
In the autumn of 1964, Bum conceived the idea for the Halling Koch Design Center.
A new, extensive textile collection was to be created, which I was to design and organise. It had to be finished before the spring of 1965 – and it was.
Only Bum could have accomplished that. Partly because of his personal knowledge of and friendship with a large number of textile manufacturers, and partly because of his enormous drive, which could make anyone understand that this was the most important thing in the whole world.
Furniture fabrics, curtains, throws and bedspreads were woven in Denmark, Norway, Germany, Belgium and England. Carpets were woven in Denmark, Sweden and Austria.
The negotiations themselves turned into a series of wonderful journeys through Europe for Bum, Johnny and me. Usually in an open two-seater MG sports car, even in winter. Bum simply loved fresh air.
When the trees came into leaf in 1965, we were able to present the results of our many adventurous winter journeys at the Furniture Fair in Fredericia.
The extensive collection was designed so that all the patterns complemented each other in colour and could be coordinated. The colours were not based on a system, but on my own sense of colour.
As always when creating something for Bum, I was given complete freedom. He would say to the artists he worked with: “I’ll do exactly as you say.” And that certainly makes you think carefully.
He was always completely enthusiastic about the result. It was always the best thing he had ever seen – and that was incredibly inspiring!
The beautiful mohair throws originate from this Nanna Ditzel collection and are now being relaunched in collaboration with Skriver Collection.
