The story of how Bum created an innovative textile company in less than a year.
Narrated by Nanna Ditzel who designed the entire new collection and who traveled Europe with Bum and his wife Johnny to find manufacturers who would weave the textiles.
In the autumn of 1964, Bum conceived the idea for the Halling Koch Design Center.
A new large textile collection was to be created, which I had to design and organize. It had to be finished before the spring of 1965 – and it was.
Only Bum could have done that. Partly by his personal knowledge of and friendship with a large number of textile manufacturers, and partly by his enormous driving force, which can make anyone understand that this is the most important thing in the whole world.
Furniture fabrics, curtains, throws and bedspreads were woven in Denmark, Norway, Germany, Belgium and England. Carpets were woven in Denmark, Sweden and Austria.
In the negotiation round itself, it took the form of a series of celebratory trips through Europe, Bum, Johnny and I. Usually in an open 2 seater MG sports car, even in winter time. Bum likes fresh air so much.
When the book was published in 1965, we were able to show at the Furniture Fair in Fredericia what we had gained from the winter's many adventurous journeys.
The very extensive collection was organized so that all designs complemented each other in terms of color and could be coordinated. The colors were not based on a system, but on my own color vision.
As always when you did something for Bum, I had been given a free hand. He tells the artists he works with. "I do exactly as you say". And then you have to think about it.
He is always unreservedly enthusiastic about the result. It's always the best he's ever seen and it's very inspiring!
